Captain Stephanie Johnson

Stephanie Johnson is a Graduate of Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Technology.  As a student in the flight program she earned her Private, Commercial, Flight Instructor, and Flight Engineer Certificates with Instrument and Multiengine ratings.  While continuing her education at Kent State, she worked as a Flight Instructor in the Aviation program.   She also worked in airport operations.  After graduating in 1991 she continued as a Flight Instructor at Kent State University and at Medina Municipal (Freedom Field) Airport, Medina, Ohio.  In 1993 Stephanie was hired as an Airport Operations Agent, Burke Lakefront Airport, Cleveland, Ohio.  After work and on her days off she continued to flight instruct as a second full-time job.   She then flew as an on-demand charter pilot and in 1995 earned her Airline Transport Pilot certificate.  Also during that year she was hired as a commercial Airline pilot with Mesa Airlines. In October 1997 Stephanie was hired by Northwest Airlines as it’s first African American female pilot.  Her first assignment was Flight Engineer on the Boeing 727.  Stephanie has also qualified as First Officer on the 727 and the Airbus 320.  Her current position is First Officer on the Boeing 757/767 now with Delta Air Lines.

As a member of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals as well as the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. it is Stephanie’s goal to promote Aviation and to help empower young people to define and achieve their personal goals.  She has been a regular participant in many Career events for youth including the Detroit, Pontiac, and Cleveland ACE camps, as well as the Delta Air Lines sponsored Dream Flight. In April 2011Stephanie was honored with a distinguished alumni award from her alma mater Kent State University.  She is married to Andre’ L. Johnson, a Lt. Colonel and T-38 Instructor pilot in the USAF Reserves. He is also a pilot with Delta Air Lines.  They have three great children that make everyday challenges worthwhile.
